Even though there is an influx of more and more new bands each year (this is the case this past year, from September last year til now, with plenty of debuts, ranging from Curt Anderson, Hollyn, Jordan Feliz, Consumed By Fire, and Grayson Reed, to Urban Rescue, We Are Messengers, John Tibbs, Stars Go Dim, Hannah Kerr and Hannah Schaefer) there is still the tendency of veterans to take longer to record each album.

Is this the case this time around though? Well, let me just say this. If you’ve read the previous WOW Hits reviews on this site, as well as others I have written on Christian Music Zine (which is now sadly no longer running!), you’ll know that there were some dubious song choices and obvious song omissions, even whole artist omissions. Supposedly the ‘best songs of today’s top Christian artists and hits’, it’s time for me to dissect the track list and figure out if WOW Hits 2017: Deluxe Edition is the best 39 tracks the year has to offer. Not that that is a bad thing by any means, but it’s just interesting. So I guess it’s no surprise that once I saw the track list earlier this week when their facebook page posted the news, and I saw plenty of glaring omissions I still wondered ‘Is WOW Hits even relevant anymore’? Are there any artists that have been present in almost every WOW Hits that really deserve to be there? Apart from Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day and Newsboys, most of the artists present in the WOW Hits in the 90’s and early 2000’s have come and gone. When you’re on a good thing, there’s no reason to change the formula right? If something has worked in the past, is there a reason to be adventurous and do something different? In the case of the latest incarnation of WOW Hits- WOW Hits 2017, to be released on September 23 rd this year, there’s a little bit of both- a bit of the ‘sameness’ that has been present in previous years gone by, as well as an element of surprise and clever song choices, signifying boldness and a willingness to be more timely and current.
